MOMMY’S LIGHT LIVES ON FUND® NAMED A 2007-2008 GRANTEE

BY PHILADELPHIA AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE

One of 39 Delaware Valley Organizations Receiving

Grants for Breast Cancer Education, Treatment and Cure Initiatives

PHILADELPHIA, PA – June 7, 2007 – The Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure named Mommy’s Light Lives On Fund® the recipient of one of 39 grants awarded to healthcare and social organizations throughout the Delaware Valley to support their projects for breast cancer education, screening and treatment. The distribution of $2.1 million in grant money for 2007-2008 is a result of the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate's fund-raising efforts throughout 2006, the biggest contributor being the 16th Annual Susan G. Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure.®

Mommy's Light was awarded a grant for its special initiative to support the breast cancer movement in the Delaware Valley, aimed at providing direct services and education to bereaved young people, their families and communities.

Founded in 1997, Mommy’s Light brings joy and comfort to children and teens by helping them keep alive traditions and simple pleasures they shared with their mothers who are terminally ill or have died.  There are more than 20,000 children under the age of 18 in the Delaware Valley who have experienced the deaths of their mothers.  The organization also provides free grief education resource materials, including literature and a groundbreaking 22-minute DVD, that help surviving fathers, caregivers, counselors and teachers better understand a child’s bereavement process. “Certainly, Mommy's Light demonstrates a deep devotion to the breast cancer movement… the type of commitment, hope and hands-on initiative that define the empowerment of Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” said Elaine Grobman, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Affiliate. “It has already had a profound effect on many lives, and I am confident it will have an impact on many other women and families facing the challenges of breast cancer.  We are honored and fortunate to have the organization fighting side by side with us.”

“It’s a privilege to be named a grantee,” says Laura Munts, Mommy’s Light Executive Director.  “We are particularly delighted that the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has become a Mommy’s Light Lives On Fund 10th Anniversary Sponsor as we celebrate a decade of helping maternally bereaved children and their families throughout the Delaware Valley.”

Seventy-five percent of the total monies raised through the 2006 Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure stays in the Delaware Valley community to support education, screening and treatment initiatives—the 2006-2007 Grant recipients. The remaining funds will go towards the Komen National Research Grant Program.

The 39 grantees were selected by a specialized Grant Review Board based on each applicant’s stated objective for its initiative in relation to the specific breast health needs of the Delaware Valley.  The Affiliate worked with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct a comprehensive community needs assessment. This community profile was then used to establish grant application requirements and review process criteria in order to ensure selected initiatives address the specific unmet breast health needs of the Delaware Valley community.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure was born in a promise between two sisters—Nancy Brinker to her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36—to end breast cancer forever.  Since launching the breast cancer movement 25 years ago, Komen for the Cure has transformed the culture—how the world talks about and treats this devastating disease.  It has helped turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors

Today, Komen is the world's largest and most progressive grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists—the only grassroots organization fighting to cure breast cancer at every stage, from the causes to the cures and the pain and anxiety of every moment in between. Headquartered in Exton, Pennsylvania, Mommy’s Light provides free resources nationally and directly serves children between the ages of 3 and 18 throughout the greater Philadelphia area.  There are more than 626,000 maternally bereaved children in the United States, including 20,000 eligible children in the Delaware Valley.  For more information or to become a volunteer, visit www.mommyslight.org or call 610-725-9790.
