Dear Mommy’s Light Community,
Over the past 10 years, I have been fortunate to be
involved with Mommy’s Light in many ways. I knew
Mary Murphy, the organization’s founder, and her
son. Mary was brilliant - she could light up a room
and uplift everyone in it with her kind words and
beautiful smile.
When Laura Munts shared Mary’s vision with me, I
knew that I wanted to be involved because the
mission touched my heart and Laura’s passion was
contagious. In the beginning, it was a daunting task
to move from Mary’s idea to a practical business
plan. Laura would call me often just to share all
the things that were in the works to bring Mary’s
dream to life – incorporating, filing with the IRS
for non-profit status, recruiting a board of
directors, finding out about non-profit postage,
etc. My first job was to listen.
In January 2000, Laura asked me to be in the first
Mommy’s Light volunteer training class, and of
course I accepted. She asked for my feedback, which
of course I gave. She and Andrew, her husband, had
designed a beautiful training session; it has been
tweaked since then but the essence is the same. In
July 2000, she asked me to visit a grieving family
with her, which of course I did. Over the years, she
has asked for help with this or that event and of
course I helped. Then in March 2006, Laura asked me
to become Mommy’s Light’s Program Coordinator, which
of course I am. I am grateful that she keeps
asking and that I keep saying yes!
There are two things that I love most about being
involved with Mommy’s Light – the people I work with
are the best, and then there are the children I
serve. I call them ‘my families’... I think that is
what most Request Grantors call the families they
serve. I have had the privilege of knowing an
eighteen-year-old girl who, when her mother died,
quit school to go to work so she could keep her
three sisters together. The younger girls have
remained in school. I have been delivering their
traditions of back-to-school shopping, going roller
skating and going out to the movies for four years.
One of the most extraordinary moments for me was
meeting with a young mother and her husband just two
hours before her death. We talked about ways to help
their daughter keep her spirit alive. As Program
Coordinator, every Mommy’s Light family has become
‘my family’ and I am blessed to know them.
Thank you, Mommy’s Light, for enriching my life.
