COMCAST HONORED FOR SUPPORT OF BEREAVED CHILDREN
Named “Sponsor of the Year” by Mommy’s Light Lives On
Fund
Philadelphia – October
31, 2006 – William Bronson, Manager of Government
Affairs for Comcast Cable, Eastern Division, accepted
the “Mommy’s Light Sponsor of the Year” award, presented
to Comcast for its outstanding support and commitment to
Mommy’s Light Lives On Fund. The award was presented at
the organization’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation
Celebration. Joan Kistler of Chester Springs, PA and
Christine Skoroda of North Wales, PA, were named
“Volunteers of the Year.”
Founded in 1997, Mommy’s Light Lives On Fund brings joy
and comfort to children and teens whose mothers have
died or are terminally ill by helping them keep alive
traditions and simple pleasures they shared with their
mothers. There are more than 20,000 eligible children
in the Delaware Valley and more than 125,000 new
maternally bereaved children each year in the United
States. (www.mommyslight.org)
Comcast has a long-standing relationship with Mommy’s
Light, and supports the organization through a
three-year, $25,000 commitment. Additionally, Michael
Doyle, Eastern Division president and founder of CN8,
The Comcast Network, sits on the Board of Mommy’s Light
and, last June, served as chairperson for The First
Annual Mommy’s Light Golf Classic, helping raise more
than $100,000 to benefit Mommy’s Light Lives On Fund.
“Over the last three years, Comcast’s generous grants
have been earmarked for volunteer development and
training,” said Laura Munts, executive director, Mommy’s
Light. “Through Comcast’s support, we have been able to
improve the quality of training materials and sessions,
and better link volunteer interests with opportunities.
Not only have we been able to double our volunteer
force, but the number of hours contributed have more
than doubled.”
More than 100 of Mommy’s Light’s 300 volunteers have
been trained to serve bereaved children. Last year,
volunteers staffed 22 training, informational and
fundraising events. More than 80 volunteers turned out
on one day to staff the annual Mommy’s Light benefit
race.
“Since Michael Doyle joined our Board of Directors in
2003, we have felt the incredible impact of Comcast’s
support and leadership,” added William J. Widing, III,
Esq., Mommy's Light Chairman of the Board. “Comcast
also has had a direct impact on the children, fulfilling
some of their tradition requests, such as arranging for
a child to attend a basketball game once a year. This
year, the child’s special evening included courtside
seats and a chance to meet the players!”
