Mommy’s Light Awarded $10,000 by the Philadelphia Affiliate of

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation

Philadelphia, PA - 4 December 2003 - The Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has awarded $10,000 to Mommy’s Light Lives On Fund for its work with young people in the Delaware Valley whose mothers are afflicted with breast cancer. Since its inception, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has awarded $450 million for the fight against breast cancer.

Mommy's Light is one of 25 area non-profit institutions receiving a grant from a total of $1,137,376 in grant funds through the Philadelphia Affiliate this year. Mommy's Light brings joy and comfort to young people whose mothers are in life-threatening situations or deceased by helping them keep alive traditions and simple pleasures they shared with their mothers.

"We are very pleased to be able to support the work of Mommy’s Light," said Elaine Grobman, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. "Mommy’s Light’s dedicated and compassionate service helps a most vulnerable segment of the population - children who are experiencing their mothers' battles against breast cancer."

"Mommy's Light was created by Mary Murphy of Newtown Square less than three months before she died of cancer in 1997," said Downingtown resident Laura Munts, Mommy's Light President. "Mary and her son created a plan to keep her spirit alive by preserving special traditions they shared. Today, our services are available to young people in southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and northern Delaware. Sixty percent of the children we serve have mothers who have, or who have died from, breast cancer." Mommy's Light estimates that 20,000 young people in the Delaware Valley are dealing with the potential or actual deaths of their mothers.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Foundation is an international organization with a network of volunteers working to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
