Philadelphia, PA - 24 October 2002
- The Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation has awarded $4,000 to Mommy’s Light
Lives On Fund for its work with young people whose mothers
are afflicted with breast cancer in the Delaware Valley.
This year, the Philadelphia Affiliate has awarded over $1
million to 18 area nonprofits, including Mommy’s Light.
Mommy's Light is a non-profit
organization based in the Delaware Valley that brings joy
to young people whose mothers are in life-threatening
situations or deceased by keeping alive traditions and
simple pleasures they shared with their mothers.
"The fund was created by Mary
Murphy of Newtown Square less than three months before she
died of cancer in 1997," said Downingtown resident Laura
Munts, Mommy's Light President. "Mary and her son created
a plan to keep her spirit alive by preserving special
traditions they shared. Today, our services are available
to young people in southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New
Jersey and northern Delaware." Mommy's Light estimates
that 20,000 young people in the Delaware Valley are
dealing with the potential or actual deaths of their
mothers.
"We are very pleased to be able to
support the work of Mommy’s Light," said Elaine Grobman,
Executive Director of the Philadelphia Affiliate of the
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. "Mommy’s Light’s
dedicated and compassionate service helps a most
vulnerable segment of the population - children who are
experiencing their mother’s battle against breast cancer."
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to
honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died
from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Foundation
is an international organization with a network of
volunteers working to eradicate breast cancer as a
life-threatening disease. For more information contact the
